James Stephenson is a Newcastle-based Designer-Maker whose journey began in the craft of hand-shaping surfboards—an early practice that revealed how subtle design gestures can shape both function and perception. This tactile, intuitive foundation nurtured a lasting respect for material, form, and the physical act of making.
After studying 3D Design at Northumbria University, James shifted from surfboards to furniture and objects, establishing a part-time studio practice alongside his role as a Furniture Designer.
James’s practice is rooted in learning through doing—refining forms, developing narratives, and allowing materials to lead the process. His work is guided by an ongoing exploration of how form influences perception, with the intention of creating objects that are tactile, visually bold, and emotionally resonant.
Looking forward, James envisions building a self-sustaining studio that contributes to the creative culture of the North East through workshops and community projects.
